Among the various cross-swims achieved by Mr. Fabio Matacchiera, devoid of wet suit and flippers, there is 3rd 24-HOUR RACE World Swim Performance, on a distance of 64,372 Km, which took place in 1986 (Fabio Matacchiera broke the Italian record of Mr. Paolo Pinto, which was of 57,587 Km and got close to the World record of Van Der Offen). After that, he beat the record of time- trial double cross-swim on Lake of Iseo, in 1984, and the World attempt of joining Africa to Europe through swimming (Tunisia-Italy) (1990). Then, came the cross swim of the Messina Straits, in 1986, international distance of 16Km, which had the best European athletes taking part to it. Mr.Matacchiera attained the 13° place among the Italians (3rd in his category), though the distance was notappropriate for him, as it was too short. In the course of that cross swim, many swimmers dropped out of the race, because of the heavy cold streams of Messina Straits which occurred that very day. Only 32 swimmers crossed the finishing line. In addition, there are the cross-swims of Taranto Gulf, which are also worth to be mentioned. The first one was from Ginosa Marina to Cape Saint Vito (1983), and then from Metaponto to Cape Saint Vito (1985) and then again from Ginosa Marina to Cape Saint Vito (1995). There was also the cross swim of Lake of Garda, from Salò to Portese Islet, which was organized, in its honour, by the Administration of the Commune of S.Felice del Benaco (Brescia) and by the Association of Italian Sailors of Garda (1986). Finally, 20 years after, in August 2005, Mr. Matacchiera repeated successfully the cross swim of Taranto’s Gulf, leaving from Metaponto (Lucania) and reaching Taranto (Apulia). During his performances Mr. Fabio Matacchíera has always been supported by federal umpires and by officers. (For further information - under construction)

In 1991 he founded the environmental Association "Caretta caretta", in Taranto, which he has managed for 7 years. The Association has been established for protecting, defending and monitoring the sea. This organization stood out for the numerous times it filed a charge against poachers and polluters, responsible for serious damages against sea landscape and that, in several cases, have been condemned by Judicial Authority. Nevertheless, this activity has never been easy and safe: Mr. Matacchiera himself has undergone some serious retaliations. (For further information)

At present, he alternates between his job as a teacher in High Schools and his activity of designing and implementing various types of professional underwater equipment, through his personal tasks and through his highly qualified technical staff.
